AHRC-funded PhD studentship on Records of Early English Drama North-East

ReedLogo_small Applications are invited for a three-year doctoral studentship commencing on 1 October 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The award has become available as part of the AHRC-funded editorial project Records of Early English Drama North-East: performance, music and ceremonial in England’s North-East, from the 8th century to 1642.

Under the general supervision of Prof. Barbara Ravelhofer, English Studies, the PhD student will collaborate with an international project team, work on records of theatre history, and participate in a drama festival and a conference. For more information about REED-NE, see the project website.

The PhD student will produce a dissertation on performance in England’s North-East in any chosen period up to 1642, and will have the opportunity to shape the thesis according to evolving interests. Possible topics include: drama and religion; patrons and players; props and costumes; landscape, towns, and performance spaces; the use of animals in theatre; musical drama. The student will have access to material discovered by project members. S/he will examine visual evidence, objects and written records in Durham’s special collections and regional archives; for instance, paradramatic ceremonies in liturgy, biblical plays, financial records, household inventories, chronicle entries, and Catholic and protestant polemic. The successful candidate will gain research experience in the Digital Humanities and benefit from a training visit at the University of Toronto.
