Celebrate the birthday of the great Northumbrian Modernist poet, Basil Bunting, on Wednesday 1st March. Join the Centre for Poetry and Poetics at an afternoon of talks and readings with the Newcastle poet, Tom Pickard, who knew Bunting well and also brought Allen Ginsberg to Newcastle to read in 1973, and with Durham’s own Paul Batchelor. All events are free and open to all.

There will be film clips, followed by a full-length reading of Bunting’s famous poem, Briggflatts. Paul Batchelor will read with Tom Pickard in the evening, and there will be wine available at the reading.

3.00 pm Tom Pickard presents film interviews with Allen Ginsberg, Ed Dorn, and Allen Fisher; Bill Lancaster talks about the Newcastle cultural scene in the 1960s; and Alex Niven talks about Basil Bunting’s letters. Palace Green Library, Learning Centre.

5.00 pm Basil Bunting’s Briggflatts: group reading of the poem in full. Hatfield College Chapel.

7.00 pm Tom Pickard and Paul Batchelor: Poetry Reading. Palace Green Library Café, with wine reception.

This promises to be a memorable afternoon and evening. Do come along!
