August is traditionally a quiet month for literary events in our new monthly North East listing – but fear not, because our Late Summer Lectures series kicks off from 17th August to fill the void. Join us weekly on Wednesdays at 5.30 in Alington House, Durham to hear fascinating research on literary topics ranging from apocalypse, to alchemy and the Holy Grail, to sex and nostalgia at the seaside. In a similar vein, check out the Northumbria Summer speakers series that continues through to October.
If you’re looking for somewhere to visit this summer, you could do worse than head to the beautiful Ushaw College to encounter the life and literary works of mountaineer Joe Tasker, in an exhibition curated by Dr Abbie Garrington, along with Claire Marsland (Ushaw College) and Kelda Roe (Mountain Heritage Trust). Or head to the Woodhorn Museum in Northumberland for Storehouse of Words, which reveals the story of the Northern Poetry Library and takes an inspired look at the connections between poetry and life.
This is just a snapshot of what’s on in the North East this month. Subscribe to our full listing for our monthly newsletter, or keep in touch with us on Twitter or Facebook for reminders and additional events.
