English Literature Events in December 2015

Our English Literature events listing for December 2015 is out now. As well as gobbling the mince pies this festive season, be sure to stuff your mind with the feast of talks, lectures and book chat coming to our region this side of Christmas.

In keeping with the “spirit” of the year, Professor Simon James will explore the role played by ghosts throughout Charles Dickens’s fiction, ranging from A Christmas Carol to his short stories; there may also be muppets. The English Society celebrates Christmas with its annual FROST: Festive Reading of Seasonal Tidbits. Bring along a reading of your own, or just sit back and enjoy along with mince pies and mulled wine. Similar treats, both aural and edible, are in store at the last two Colpitts Poetry readings of 2015.

From the cold winter, to the Cold War, join Professor James Chapman as he spies into the ways James Bond has represented real-world anxieties over the years.

Also this month, meet the screenwriter of the BBC Poldark series, take a creative tour of the Toon, take a step back into the long summer of 1710, and marvel at some grotesque fashion.

This is just a small snapshot of what’s on in the North East this month. Head over to our full listing for more, or keep in touch with us on Twitter or Facebook for reminders and additional events over the next few weeks.
