A workshop and symposium will explore the representation and interpretation of memory and time across a variety of disciplines.
These two events form part of the annual theme for Durham’s Institute of Advanced Study, which this year is examining Time.
On 9th November, a workshop for research postgraduates features IAS Fellows (Professor Robert Levine, Professor Andy Wood, and Dr David Martin-Jones) alongside an academic from the Department of English Studies (Dr Michael Mack). They will lead discussions with new researchers to develop new ways of thinking about the complex topic of time and memory.
On 10th November, a day-long symposium will bring together scholars from Durham and visiting IAS Fellows to explore the theme from the perspectives of English, History, Classics, Music, Psychology and Philosophy. Topics range from the representation of memory and time in the literature of Latin America, to the rhythm of time in music and cinema. The day will close with a conversation between the novelist and psychologist Dr Charles Fernyhough and Professor Simon J. James.
